Board the train these days and once you’re underway all doors stay locked. If you’re on, you’re on. There’s no falling out, but then there’s no getting off.



My train’s not like that. It’s not one of those with modern carriages. It's called a ‘slam door’ train. You can open the doors yourself - from the inside. They say they’re not as safe. What’s 'safe' is relative. Is a car safer than a motorbike? Depends how hard it hits you.



I saw an old train a few days ago. Really old. There was a billow of steam flowing from its nose. It ran non-stop through the station. Don’t know how much the passengers could see for all the clouds of recycled tear-vapour in their eyes.
